I looked in the direction he was indicating and saw a man, about 30, well dressed, with a briefcase firmly in hand. He looked to be in pretty good shape, and was walking with a rapid gait. Totally unsuitable.
“No, he’s no good.” I immediately discouraged him. “He’s too young and looks a little too much on the ball. Let’s wait some more.”
Ten minutes went by, and after disqualifying three more people, I finally spotted the perfect victim. I couldn’t possibly have imagined a better target for my jumpy accomplice’s first criminal undertaking. The lady was in her fifties and slightly overweight. One hand was clenching a shocking pink leash restraining a strange rat-dog wearing a bow on its head, and the other hand supported a shopping bag, that judging from the sweat beading her forehead, must’ve been rather heavy.
Perfect! She looked like she’d just stepped from the pages of chapter one of Pickpocketing for Dummies.
“Go, Velvet Hands!” I encouraged him with a little push. “Remember. . . quick and painless!”

Il paraissait être plutôt en forme, et marchait d'un pas vif et rapide. Pas le bon du tout. « Non, lui, ça va pas, » le décourageai-je aussitôt. « Il est trop jeune et il a l'air d'être un peu trop sur ses gardes. Attendons encore un peu. » Dix minutes s'écoulèrent, et après avoir disqualifié trois autres personnes, je repérai enfin la victime idéale. Je n'aurais pas pu imaginer meilleure cible pour la première entreprise criminelle de mon complice sautillant. La dame avait la cinquantaine et était légèrement en surpoids. Elle serrait dans une de ses mains une laisse d'un rose criard qui retenait un drôle de chien-rat avec un nœud sur la tête, et soutenait de l'autre un sac de courses qui, à en juger par la sueur qui perlait sur son front, devait être plutôt lourd. Parfait ! Elle paraissait tout droit sortie des pages du premier chapitre du Vol à la tire pour les Nuls. « Vas-y, Pattes de Velours ! » l'exhortai-je en le poussant légèrement. « N'oublie pas. . . rapide et sans douleur ! »

Aubrey stood in the oversized guest bathroom at the Montana Lodge, staring at herself in the mirror. Her long hair was twisted into a loose side braid, mascara rimming her bright green eyes, a little blush bringing out her cheekbones. She wore a delicate, empire-waisted dress just the creamy yellow color of afternoon sunlight, the neckline dipping to show off her décolletage. A pretty white lace ribbon circled her waist just below her generous breasts and tied at her back, shaping out the hourglass of her figure. She’d finished her ensemble with a soft, short-sleeved white cardigan and fire-red cowboy boots, a beloved impulse purchase she’d made a few years back and rarely had the opportunity to show off.
She looked down at her arms, at her tattoos. She had a thick black ankh on one wrist, and a Celtic wrought-iron cross on the other. One of her upper arms featured a beautiful grass-green snake coiled around a vivid red apple. The other arm had a scattered pattern of tiny stars, moons, and planets in different colors. She loved her tattoos, and added one to her collection every year as a birthday present to herself.

Debout dans l'immense salle de bain du Chalet dans le Montana, Aubrey se regardait fixement dans le miroir. Elle baissa les yeux vers ses bras, vers ses tatouages. Elle avait un ankh noir épais sur un poignet, et une croix Celtique en fer forgé sur l'autre. Sur le haut de l'un de ses bras se trouvait un superbe serpent vert pré enroulé autour d'une pomme rouge vif. Sur son autre bras était dispersé un motif de minuscules étoiles, lunes et planètes de couleur différentes. Elle adorait ses tatouages, et en ajoutait un chaque année à sa collection, qu'elle s'offrait en cadeau d'anniversaire.
